“Kikuyo is an interdependent editorial project at the service of social movements, collective work, and prioritizes a publishing approach that de-elitizes the book. We articulate the concept of the organic book: a living book, one that is organic to the publishing, graphic, and creative community, promoting alternative models of production and social engagement. We see in the book as an object and in the reading experience, a crucible of both critical and aesthetic potential. Based in the Andes, we work to preserve and disseminate the sensitive texts and images of our region. Our model of editorial production is a hybrid between the artisanal crafting of the object and certain industrial techniques."
Reference images and cataloguing included. Contains 19 books published in different formats, printing techniques (silkscreen, offset, digital, etc), custom-made papers, ephemera, and artifacts. Most of the books are hand-bound or include components that encourage collective participation: weaving, seeds for planting, etc. The subjects range from visual aspects of calligraphy and type to studies on indigenous cultures. Language(s) of publication: Spanish, Kichwa, Mapudungún, Aymara, English.
